The EU Blue Card in Germany for tech roles

Germany works differently from the US and UK: employers don't need a sponsor licence. If you have a recognised degree and an offer above the Blue Card threshold, you qualify. The real question is which employers will hire someone from abroad and help with the paperwork.

Checked October 2026

The 2026 salary thresholds

From 1 January 2026, the job must pay at least:

  • €50,700 gross a year in general
  • €45,934.20 for shortage occupations, which include IT specialists, and for anyone who graduated in the last three years

No degree? IT has its own route

IT specialists without a university degree can still get a Blue Card at the lower threshold if they have at least three years of professional IT experience at a comparable level, gained within the last seven years.

If you do have a degree, check that it is recognised in Germany (the anabin database lists most foreign universities) before you start applying.

Who hires internationally

Because there is no register, VisaRoles marks a German role as likely to sponsor when the posting says so, or when the employer holds a UK licence, Dutch recognition or Irish permits elsewhere in Europe.

Tech employers with many open roles in Germany on VisaRoles in October 2026 include Helsing, Robert Bosch, SumUp, Grafana Labs, N26 and Doctolib.

Practical tips

  • Berlin and Munich hold most English-speaking tech roles.
  • A posting written in German usually means German is required day to day.
  • Ask early whether the employer has hired from outside the EU before and whether it uses the fast-track procedure.

Stop guessing which employers can hire you.

Common questions

What is the minimum salary for an EU Blue Card in Germany in 2026?
€50,700 gross a year in general, and €45,934.20 for shortage occupations such as IT and for recent graduates.
Can I get a German Blue Card without a degree?
In IT, yes: with at least three years of comparable professional experience gained in the last seven years, at the lower salary threshold.
Do German employers need a sponsor licence?
No. Any employer can hire you on a Blue Card if the job and salary qualify, which is why VisaRoles judges German roles by what the posting says and the employer's sponsorship record elsewhere.
