Senior Software Engineer - Kubernetes

Overview Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and the sky is the limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world. Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. We are hiring a Senior SOftware Engineer. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture. Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and more. Additionally, Azure Monitor is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We have a multi-billion dollar business that is growing rapidly, and we run some of the world’s highest scale observability services both for Microsoft internally and for our external customers, processing over 1.5 Exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics. Within the Azure Monitor team, we are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and evolve the cloud-native infrastructure layer for Azure Monitor and other observability services. This role is ideal for someone who can own complex Kubernetes-based platform systems end to end, drive architecture across teams, improve reliability and security at scale, and shape how AI-assisted and AI-agentic capabilities are safely applied to infrastructure operations. We embrace a fast-paced, startup-like culture focused on shipping early and often, with an emphasis on attention to detail, introspection, and accountability. Collaboration is at the heart of our team. We build on each other’s ideas and empower engineers to innovate from the ground up, delivering world-class value at speed. What we build: Planetary-scale, Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure platforms for Azure Monitor workloads. Highly scalable, resilient microservices and operational tooling are hosted in the cloud. Availability of indicators, monitoring, alerting, diagnostics, and auto-mitigation capabilities. Secure, compliant, cost-efficient infrastructure patterns that improve reliability across Azure Monitor services. We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served. At Microsoft, our mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. We foster a culture of inclusion, growth, and innovation, built on values of respect, integrity, and accountability. If you're passionate about driving meaningful impact, solving complex problems, and contributing to a growing organization, we would love to hear from you. Responsibilities Lead design and code reviews across feature areas and participate in all stages of our engineering lifecycle (initial research and discovery, quick iteration on promising concepts, solution prototyping and development, deployment and live site support). Developers in the team are expected to wear multiple hats and demonstrate breadth, depth, and leadership. Work with multiple partner teams and deploy across all Azure regions. Passionate about distributed systems and planetary scale services. Enjoys the challenge of designing cloud infrastructure platform components built on Kubernetes, with a focus on reliability, security, networking, diagnosability, and global-scale cost efficiency. Excels at identifying bottlenecks and engineering solutions for complex production systems end to end, from ambiguous problem definition and design tradeoffs through execution, launch, monitoring, and operational maturity. Lead cross-organization alignment with adjacent infrastructure, observability, platform, and service teams to define clear ownership, unblock execution, and shape long-term investments. Raise the engineering bar through design reviews, operational reviews, architecture guidance, incident follow-through, and repeatable engineering standards. Shape safe, reliable use of AI-agentic systems and AI-assisted operations for Kubernetes-based infrastructure at scale. Embody our culture and values Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
