Senior Software Dev Engineer, Route 53 Health Checks and Console Core

Build the service that checks the health of millions of endpoints around the world every few seconds, and the consoles customers rely on to run DNS and route traffic at global scale. As a Senior SDE on the Amazon Route 53 Health Checks and Console Core team, you will own the technical direction for the team and drive the plan with leadership, lead how we use AI to design, build, test, and operate software, and grow the engineers around you. You will own the distributed health checking infrastructure and the public API in front of it, build the AI tooling every Route 53 service team depends on, and launch new AI services for DNS and Route 53. You will help define what our customers use next. We are based in Vancouver, BC. We own Route 53 Health Checks, a highly available endpoint monitoring service that helps Route 53 DNS, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon RDS, Amazon S3, and many other AWS services maintain high availability for their customers. We also own the core tooling, standards, and shared infrastructure that every Route 53 console is built on. This is a full stack role. You will design and operate the services and APIs behind Route 53 Health Checks, and you will take our console tooling from something our team uses to something every Route 53 service team builds on, while we hold the quality bar on what ships. Your work will reach across more than 10 service teams and the product managers, designers, and engineers you partner with throughout AWS networking. AI is central to how we work and what we build. As a senior engineer on the team, you will own how we work with it. You will define the AI development process the team runs on across coding, testing, and operations, decide which tools and practices we adopt, measure whether they make us faster and safer, and roll what works out to the service teams that build on our platform. You will own the results of the team, not only your own code. You will drive our yearly plan, turn goals into projects with milestones and estimates, sequence the work across the team, and track it to delivery. When a plan slips or a risk shows up, you raise it early and change the plan. You will lead projects that span several engineers, drive the designs behind them, and mentor engineers through design reviews and code reviews. Key job responsibilities - Own the technical direction and the roadmap for the team, and lead projects that span several engineers from requirements to launch. - Drive the yearly plan for the team with leadership, break goals into projects with milestones and estimates, and recommend what the team builds first - Track delivery across the team, raise risks early, and adjust the plan when priorities or dependencies change. - Define and run the AI development process for the team across coding, testing, and operations, and roll it out to service teams across Route 53. - Mentor and grow the engineers on the team, and raise the bar through design reviews, code reviews, and operational reviews. - Design, build, and operate the distributed health checking infrastructure and public API behind Route 53 Health Checks. - Build and vend the AI tooling that service teams across Route 53 use to design and build their own console changes, and hold the quality bar on what they ship. - Own and build new AI services and capabilities for DNS and Route 53, from idea to launch. - Operate what you build. Take part in on call, own metrics and alarms, and drive root cause analysis on production issues. - Work with product managers, designers, and engineers across more than 10 service teams in AWS networking. - Turn requirements that are ambiguous and change quickly into products customers rely on. Our health checking stack is primarily Java and Linux, with lots of interaction with public AWS services and Amazon internal tools. Our console stack is TypeScript and React. We do not expect you to know all of it, but we do expect you to be excited to learn it. A day in the life Our customers are the developers and businesses who use Route 53 to manage DNS and route traffic for their applications around the world, and our job is to make that easy, reliable, and fast. No two days look the same. You might start the morning reviewing a design with an engineer you mentor, then work with the team on a new AI practice to cut the time from idea to production. After lunch you might review a change a service team submitted and hold the bar on the console patterns and the design guidelines, then spend the rest of the afternoon on the health checking infrastructure itself, on the checkers that monitor millions of endpoints or the public API in front of them. Some days you go deep on a distributed system, other days you are building tooling or trying out a new AI tool and deciding whether the team should adopt it. You drive the plan for what the team builds next with leadership, track how it is going, and partner with service teams across AWS networking to ship features that reach customers everywhere. When a hackathon idea grabs you, there is room to chase it. About the team We are a tight knit team that cares about our customers and about running a highly available platform on the Internet. We like to experiment and to learn out loud, whether that is a hackathon, a demo of something you just built, or a session digging into a new AI tool together. We are good at making sense of ambiguity and shipping products people rely on, and we welcome bold ideas and give you the ownership to take them all the way. And when we are not building, we make time to have fun together with regular team outings. If you want to lead hard problems at scale, help shape the plan for a team that builds with AI, and help decide where an AWS service goes next, we would like to hear from you. - 7+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience - 7+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - 7+ years of highly scalable systems experience - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
